Furisode was a form of Kimono traditionally worn by un-married women, signified by the elongated sleeves (Sode).
In earlier times, women waved their sleeves at the person whom they were attracted to leading to the modern use of the word to wave (Furu) in romantic context. (Furu/Futta) Reject / Rejected.
Once women married, they would shorten the sleeves of their Kimono to signify they would only love their husband.
